Author Spotlight – Dariel Raye – Kaden’s Reprieve

She needs a safe haven, he wants his freedom. Add a supernatural matchmaker and an unexpected mentor, and their lives will never be the same.

Tanya has been running for her life for two years, but when Ms. Lillian, owner of the exclusive “Heaven’s Touch” match making service, graciously gives her a week’s stay at her private bed and breakfast in St. Augustine, FL, she seizes the opportunity to escape to a possible hideaway.

Kaden is of a rare and precious race prized for extraordinary abilities. He is also half-demon, remanded to Kushiel’s custody centuries ago. Allowed to leave Hell twice a year, three days each time – Beltane, and Samhain, his life thus far has been filled with slavery, torture, and despair, and he is nearly convinced that his soul is beyond redemption. Still, he longs for freedom. Can Tanya redeem him? Can Kaden dare hope for a reprieve?

Tanya smiled as she stepped onto the elevator. Room 333 – that should give her good fortune. She wasn’t counting on it. Ms. Lillian’s exclusive matchmaking business, “Heaven’s Touch,” was revered and respected by any and everyone with money and power – those who knew about it, that is. No matter how grateful she was, Tanya still hoped to God her benefactor wasn’t trying to hook her up with some clown.

She needed a man’s drama like she’d needed a bullet in her back a few hours ago. Plus, most men seemed intimidated by her…unless they were trying to kill her, that is. She was a big girl, and she’d always been a fighter, but right now, she was just tired and…lonely. The voice in her head that never kept silent long enough spoke up. “Matchmaking is what she does. Getting hooked up with a man is a hell of a lot better than running for your life.”

She blew an errant strand of hair out of her face. As long as there wasn’t somebody in her room, suite, whatever waiting to kill her, it was all good.

Just before the door closed, a huge hand slid inside, causing the doors to automatically stop. Heat rushed through Tanya’s body like a furnace. She glanced around to see if anyone else had been affected by the unseen force, but apparently she was just having a young adult hot flash. At least that’s what she thought until the elevator doors opened to reveal the source of  titillating heat.

She covered her heart with her right hand as she gazed into the smoky gray eyes of very possibly the most gorgeous man she’d ever seen in her twenty-nine years. Not a pretty man, but breathtaking in his masculinity. Testosterone rolled off him in waves. Over six and a half feet tall, she had to look up at him. At nearly six feet herself, looking up at a man was a welcome rarity. Storm clouds brewed in his eyes, so dark they seemed to swallow the light, and his skin, dark bronze with muscles so massive his black short-sleeve T and sweats couldn’t begin to hide them.

Her heart kicked up a few notches and she immediately understood the hot flash, stifling the overwhelming desire to fan herself. Her rational side whispered, dangerous, but the other part of her, the part she hadn’t seen nor heard from since her father was killed, purred, Yum. Okay, I know what I said about men and their drama, not to mention my own situation being a little out of sorts at the moment, but look at him. Really? Am I really supposed to just…?

She realized she was still staring at him when he hesitated, giving her an odd look as he stepped onto the elevator. A moment of embarrassment came and went when she reminded herself she’d just survived a near death experience. Well, sort of, but whether she wanted to get technical or not, she deserved something for herself, and even though he definitely looked dangerous in a delicious kind of way, she felt connected to him somehow, drawn by more than his sex appeal.

Her instincts had never been wrong. In fact, it was her instincts that saved her life, the reason she wasn’t murdered along with the rest of her family. She’d sensed something wrong that day and called her family’s witness protection handler, refusing to go inside. Riddled with guilt for months afterward, she’d wandered, nearly walking into one of the henchmen Arardo hired to kill her. Right now, her instincts were all she had.

The dark-eyed god glanced at the control panel, probably to see if his floor number was selected, then stared at the floor. Tanya glanced at the buttons again. So he was either on the second, fourth, or blessed be, the third floor with her.

She planned to ride past her floor if necessary and find out where he was staying. Of course, what she’d do when she found out was anyone’s guess, but then she’d never been much of a planner, even before she started running for her life. One step at a time. She watched him from the corner of her eye, doing a mental happy dance when they reached the third floor and he stepped out.

She skipped off after him and sauntered down the corridor towards her room, feeling like stalker girl as she stayed a respectable distance behind him. He stopped, swiped his keycard, and opened the door to his room. Tanya nearly passed by him until she noticed the room number – 333. Hmm. Maybe it was good fortune after all.

My Review:

In the spirit of full disclosure I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A short sweet romance with a dark twist. Well written. Kaden and Tanya are great characters. I enjoyed the way this brief story played out, many unexpected pieces to the plot kept it entertaining.
I would have liked just a bit more background to the characters, but with short stories it’s hard to do that without seeming like info dump.

Friday’s Question

If I were to create a “fan’s only” type of group {on Facebook or Pinterest}, where I posted fan’s only exclusive pictures of Dangerous Temptation’s characters/poses and my other books characters, {maybe some excerpts from time to time of my WIPs,} how many of you would join the page? I’d limit all snippets to that group so they wouldn’t be all over the blog,

My books will still have a page each dedicated to them here, but the snippets, pictures, ect of the in between stages would remain on the fb page only} that way I can keep the blog more writing tips, activities and marketing posts oriented and clean this place up a bit.

Not really a Street Team per say, more of a fan’s group for now, but later when I’m ready they would be the first ones offered to become my Street Team.

I want to make sure it’s worth the time and effort before I make a final decision, so, if you would join, simply comment on this point. Thanks.

Time to sound off. Do you think a fan’s only page/group is a good idea? Would you rather the blog keep the snippets, ect posts too? What kids of steps do you take to improve your blog readers/followers experiences?

Street Teams – Marketing Mondays.

Hello everyone. It’s Monday and you know what that means…. Time for Marketing Mondays.Yeah, I know I’ve been a stranger lately. Sorry. Real life has kicked in hard and fast. Aug-March are all the birthdays in my family, so I’m usually very busy in that time frame. Before that I was focused on writing commitments. Hopefully things will get back to normal now.

Today’s discussion is about Street Teams.

Advantages of Having a Street Team:

  • Word of Mouth
  • More Exposure
  • Extra Help Promoting/Marketing
  • A Place to Bounce Ideas
  • Lighter Workloads = More Time to Write

What is a Street Team? Basically it’s a group of your loyalist fans who are as excited about your books as you are and are willing to go on cyber space and out into the streets and help spread the word.

Where do you find the members to create a Street Team? From your fans.

Now, I don’t have a street team myself, but I am a member of two different street teams. M.L. Stephens’, and Krystal Shannan’s, both of which with their latest releases made 3 of the top 100’s lists on Amazon within the first 48 hours of their latest releases. Bear in mind both of these talented ladies have at least 6 books each published now, so they already have a loyal audience.

Do Street Teams work? From what I’ve seen so far {I won’t go into details out of respect for both ladies, but general tips I will share.} the answer is yes. But, it takes a lot of work to create and maintain a Street Team. Just like connecting with readers to help expand your audience, because tour team members could be in places you’d never reach otherwise. The added exposure is well worth the effort of maintaining a Street Team.

Street Teams require interacting with your team members, who are also your fans.  You set up lists of blogs you want to contact to help promote your release, discuss what Swag you want to use to help promote the books, ect. Once the lists are made, you divide the lists between the members and start contacting them, and after the launch is over, you send personalized thank-yous to each blog who helped.

Be patient. It doesn’t happen overnight. Street teams take time and effort to be successful. You all celebrate the successes together as it was a team effort that got you there.

As for the offline part, the Swag you send to your team members is passed out at their local libraries, book events, Book clubs, writing conferences, ect.  In short. Your Street Team is a group of loyal fans who happily help with promoting your books. This is all about Marketing on a much wider base than an author can handle alone.

Added bonus: With the extra help promoting your work, it frees up more time for your writing.

Is having a Street team required? No. It’s not a requirement, it’s a choice. But, it certainly couldn’t hurt. You get added exposure to a larger audience, who might otherwise never learn of you.

Should you create a Street team? That’s a decision only you can make. So many factors come into play here, finances, time commitment, ect. Authors all face different road blocks, so they have to make their own decisions based on those.

There is no magic formula for creating a Street Team.

There are no specific requirements either. Both teams I’m on have done Swag, time commitments and interactions. Those three steps are no-brainers. The rest is up to you and your team. Don’t be afraid to ask their opinions. Ask their suggestions for blogs in your niche. Remember, this is a team effort. You must work as a team if you are to be successful. Yes, you need a team leader {usually the author} but it’s a team effort. Excluding your members is a good way to guarantee your team fails.

Why I don’t have a Street Team. Several reasons. Here are the three main ones.

A: I’m just starting out as an author, getting my name and my books out there. Yes, I have fans, no I haven’t approached them to ask if they are interested in joining my Street Team.  With only two published works now, I’m very much a “newbie” to the party and I’m working hard to make my brand known.

B: Finances are really tight and have been for over eight years, so I can’t afford Swag and all that at this moment  Street Team Swag , a professional website and securing my personal domain online, all require money. So, they are on my “to do when I have the financial means” list. Unfortunately until my finances improve, there is a lot of stuff I won’t be able to do.

C: Time commitment. Right now I have so much other stuff {both writing related and real life} going  on that I don’t have the required time to invest into creating a successful Street Team. I do interact with my readers and other authors through various events and groups, ect. But, I’m a full-time mother/house wife and looking for work. I can’t spend all day/night online. I have other priorities.

Your Turn To Sound Off:

Authors and readers: Are you part of a street team for other authors? Readers, would you be willing to join your favorite author’s Street team if they created one? Why, or why not?  Authors, do you have a street team for your books? If not, why not? Do you plan to create one in the future? Feel free to share some of your Street Team experiences and tips with us.

Never Forget. How Ironic…

Okay, so as you all know I’ve been writing up a storm lately. Well, Aug 15th I released my #Christian #ShortStroy/Slice-of-life {Meaning it’s based on a real key moment in my life.} titled Never Forget.

By the way, this isn’t about “bragging rights” to me. This post is a validation that I do know what I’m talking about in my #MarketingMondays tips/posts. It’s proof for all of you out there that I’m not just blowing smoke {for lack of a better way to phrase that. }

On the 16th I saw this:

Never Forget top 100's

Which completely took my by surprise.  I figured that’s as good as it would get, right? Especially since this is my second published work and first short story/slice-of-life. I was super thrilled just to make the top 100’s list.

Well… This morning I discovered this:

Never Forget Top 100's Lists 2

Which complete blew my mind. My hands shook a bit and I blinked several times just to make sure I wasn’t imagining things, before I snapped out of my daze and screen capped it.

it’s been out two days and already reached three of the top 100’s lists!

Now, bear in mind I don’t have a street team yet. I haven’t even started to put one together, but it is something I’ve considered. However, since I’m just starting out, I’m unsure how many fans I have yet.{Something I plan to go into detail about for Marketing Mondays.}

Granted #NeverForget is only $0.99 and that may or may not have anything to do with how successful it is so far, but still… I haven’t even done much to promote it yet. I just now finished making a media kit for it.  Given all of that, these results are astounding!  My heart is racing, palms sweating just a bit and my mind keeps screaming OMG! lol.

Never Forget 3

*Side note* That’s not an accurate representation of me by any means. I have brown hair {as you’ve seen in my author picture} but the pier and fishing and plaid shirt in the summer is accurate.

A fifteen year-old Christian girl, on the brink of losing her faith in mankind as a whole… until one old man’s kindness and generosity changes her life forever.

Why does the whole world have to take a shot at me? I rubbed my tight shoulder and stomped on a bug, grinding it under my foot. Go away you nasty thing.

My shoulders hunched and my chin fell to my chest, eyes closed as something heavy settled in my belly. Great, now I’m attacking little critters? I swallowed in an attempt to hold back the tears that stung my eyes. One hand gripped the wooden rail to keep me from falling to my knees as the depression closed in around me, making my stomach toss like waves.

Please God, there has to be at least some decency out in the cruel, harsh world. I can’t take it anymore. Help me be rid of my bitterness. My constant anger has left me miserable.

I find it Ironic to have already achieved yet another unforgettable moment in my life and my writing career. I’m a bit freaked out here, but in a good way. Wow! I’m completely awed by how quick this happened, especially from the story of an life altering event.

*deep breath*

Thanks to everyone who has encouraged me and supported me. You are all amazing! I feel as if I’ve won an esteemed award and am so touched by this that I teared up. I feel so loved and am grateful that my readers enjoy my stories. It was difficult to write this piece, because it gives everyone a look into the very heart of who I am and why I am the way I am.

Updated 08-18-2013:

Final results for Never Forget.

Never Forget Top 100's 4

Have you ever reached any top 100’s lists? What are some of your unforgettable moments in life? How old were you when you had an event alter your life completely?

Author Spotlight- Krystal Shannan- Saving Margaret

SM Tour Banner

Yay! Today we’re visited by the talented author of the Vegas Mates series: Krystal Shannan. She’s sharing her latest release with us.

Vegas Mates, Book 2

Krystal Shannan

Successful, but lonely, Margaret Taylor finds her mate in the body of a man she least expects it in. A bear! Her human half tries to reason her way out of the match, but her wolf is through with her excuses. Crossing the species line isn’t unheard of, but it’s not often done.

Try as she might to avoid him, fate makes sure the big grizzly bear is nearby at all times. But, will his presence be enough to protect her from the evil stalking her?

The power of the magick between them can’t be avoided. But, Scott O’Hearn thinks the beautiful Taylor wolf is doing a fine job of just that —avoiding him. He can’t help he’s a bear shifter and he’s determined to convince her it doesn’t matter. She is his mate and he’s waited over a century to find her.

Will he convince Margaret she’s his true match before it’s too late?

Excerpt #13

“I don’t have a problem with being a bear.”

A laugh shook her slender frame. “No, I don’t suppose you have a problem being a bear.”

He grinned. At least she’d laughed. That was something. “Do you have a problem with me being a bear?”

Well, shit. That’s not the answer I was expecting. I can smell her arousal. I know she’s interested.

“Just be nice.”

I am!

“Do I frighten you?” He leaned down and inhaled her fragrant vanilla scented body wash. She smelled good enough to eat. His mind wandered through the process of stripping her naked and tasting her. He had no doubt she would taste even sweeter.

“No,” she answered.

It was a lie. Her body tensed when he’d asked the question and he could smell a hint of fear in the pheromones she was releasing.

He sighed. “We are rarely violent. Usually only when threatened.”

“I’ve only met a couple of other bear shifters and they were not the nicest people.”

“Do you judge the entire werewolf community by the actions of a few?”

“No!” she state quickly. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have made that assumption. I’m just—”

“Nervous?” he whispered.

To be continued…

My Review:

In the spirit of full disclosure I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Krystal has once again blended magic and shape shifters, with modern-day activities and romance. Margaret is a Were-wolf and an interesting character, well fleshed out and keeps the readers on their toes. Scott is a Were-bear, and a fabulous hero. Strong, sexy, charming in his gruff way. He’s Chase’s {the hero from book one} best friend and they were in the military together too.

I would have liked to see Chase and Scott interact a bit, but Chase and his mate Samantha were off on their own adventure. All in all it’s obvious from book two that MRS. Shannan has a lot of fun twists in store for us throughout the series.

My only complaint is the whole Maggie/Margaret aspect is confusing since Maggie is a common nickname for Margaret and in this series they are two different characters. The ending is a bit sad, but the future of the series is promising.

MFRW YA Blog Hop

Yay! Time for the MFRWOrg YA Blog Hop.

Click YA_Hop_Excerpt_Book for a free sampler of all YA books from the MFRWOrg members.

As you can guess my first novel #DangerousTemptation is here. So, the theme is Changes. My main characters both go through many changes here. Here is a scene of my hero’s change.

His tiger moved just beneath the surface eager to re-explore the land that captivated man and beast like nothing else ever had. Fingernails lengthened, reshaping into curved claws. The palms grew into wide padded paws. His itchy skin was quickly blanked by pristine white fur. Sandy shoulder-length hair lengthened, changing to white fur decorated with inch-wide black stripes and flowed down his back.

After clawing his shirt from his wide chest, he tore out of his creased slacks as the muscles of his thighs thickened. Stuffing the torn clothing into his bag around his neck Cadmon fell on all fours, back arched as roped muscles conformed beneath his skin. Heart soaring he transformed into the sleek form of a large tiger.

A mighty roar unleashed. He shot into the rainforest uncaring of the limbs that scratched his fur. It felt good to tear through the underbrush with sure footing as his paws pounded the ground. Cadmon hoped to outrun the unwanted memories but they refused to let go.

A family of rabbits scurried out of the way. His chest tightened as the night his twin sister died replayed in his mind, breaking his heart anew. Blood pounded in his ears. The tiger raked his claws deep into the tree bark, much like he’d rendered flesh from bone that night.

Leaping over to the next tree he raked it trying to chase away the reminder of his greatest failure. He snarled with each slash of claws. The urge to kill was so strong he tasted the metallic tang of blood. By the time he finished all trees within a twenty acre radius sported several deep gouges. Now they’d know he returned. Let his enemies come if they held such a death wish. He’d shred anyone stupid enough to confront him! A fierce roar exploded from his chest, a challenge to all nearby.

Anger abated and chest hollow, he shot into the foliage. The wind rushed through his whiskers. Life wasn’t the same without his twin. He’d give anything to see her one last time. His shoulders dropped forward as dewy flowers and various smaller animal scents filled his nostrils. Low hanging vines brushed against him. His nose twitched at the rotting vegetation.

Slowing his pace he snarled at the snakes, which hissed and slithered out of his path. Every beast of the rainforest knew his kind were the lords of the lands. If only Keely were still around. She’d be mated and with cubling by now. Crouching low, he reverted to his humanoid form, with heavy stones in his belly. He scanned his surroundings then walked with heavy footfalls over to the stream.

Hope you enjoyed my little teaser.

Bare Assets by M.L. Stephens

Bare Assets book blurb:

With nothing but shattered dreams and a busted heart to fuel the way, Angela Fletcher drove out of Arkansas and never looked back.

Six years later, the new and improved version of the girl she used to be steered clear of romance, love and late night promises. The only pillow talk Angela engaged in these days, was making sure the person on the other pillow knew to lose her number as soon as he left the bed. She only had room for one love in her life and that was Bare Assets, the gentleman’s club she poured her heart and soul into.

Dean Murray was the devil in disguise and had left behind enough broken hearted women to populate a small country. Angela would know. She was an expert markswoman who was skillfully self-trained at shooting down the good, the bad and the ugly of all masculine targets. After all, as the owner of the most successful strip club in Dallas, Texas, it was her business to know men.

Just as she begins to fall for Dean’s silky words and passionate ways, her past and present unexpectedly collide and a meticulously planned future turns into unpredictable chaos. Is the smooth talking, denim wearing devil responsible for the chaos? Or have the secrets she left buried in Arkansas, coming back to haunt her?

Changing the subject before it became too serious, Angie opened the bedroom door and glanced over her shoulder. “I don’t know about you, but I haven’t had a single thing to eat all day. If I don’t get something soon, I’m going to eat the wood off this door.”

Grinning from ear to ear, he had to say it, “I have something to appease your appetite, but I’m afraid the door doesn’t play into my lust filled scenario.”

Laughing, she tightened the rope on her robe and wittily responded, “I would love to take part in your version of a meal, but I’m afraid I need to rely on the basic food groups for now.”

“And why is that?” he asked, joining her at the door.

“Something tells me that once I truly get a taste of you, I may never want to leave this room again.

My review:

In the spirit of full disclosure I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Bare Assets is a well written Contemporary Romance, full of witty characters you will fall in love with. It’s a well written story, humorous at times and tear-jerking at others. Be prepared for an emotional roller-coaster.
Both the main characters {Angela and Dean} struggle to heal from and make peace with their painful pasts.
Overall the loose ends cleared to a satisfactory ending.

Author Bio:

I’m always clicking away at the keyboard, but when I’m not, my family, two dogs, and a very peculiar cat keep me on my toes! There’s never a boring moment at my desk!

Besides my obvious love for coffee and all things caffeinated, I love to travel. The occasional tourist stop is fun, but I’m a back road kind of gal. Take me off the beaten path. I want to meet the ordinary people behind the culture.

Small Success

Hey everyone, normally I do Marketing Mondays on Mondays, but I have a release tour thing scheduled for Monday, so here it is:

As you all have seen by this week’s posts, #DangerousTemptation got within spitting distance of making the Amazon top 100’s lists. {Anything ranked 10,000 or less usually makes the top 100’s lists.}

It dropped to 16,000 before it rapidly climbed from lack of sales {which I discovered the overall sales rank raises between 3,000-5,000 every hour of no sales till it’s at the bottom of the list.

Doesn’t that bite?

After I got over the initial disappointment and frustration of getting so close, only to miss, I decided getting that close with my debut novel, yet alone within three months of it’s release, is plain awesome!

I never expected to achieve such a feat. So, I can’t complain. Instead, I consider this a small success and will use this event to improve my marketing strategy.

What have I learned?

·         Twitter is my strongest social media marketing tool.

 ·        UK link is my quickest chance at best seller.

·         My blurb works.

·         I have a fabulous support team in all my contacts I’ve made. Seriously you all rock! I’m not the only one who wants to see me succeed as a writer.

       ·         Don’t get discouraged. All good things come with time.

How can I use this event to change my marketing strategy?

·         Focus on Twitter. That’s where I’ve had the best results.

I compared July’s sales to May’s. Which revealed promoting my book on Twitter once a day {instead of once a week} works for me.

So, if I schedule my tweets for the month at the beginning of the month, I can then log in one hour a day and one hour an evening to participate. Which will allow me to better manage my time on social medias.

·       Promo both the USA and the UK links.

·         Buffer is something I need to check into.

Hootsuite is great, but so time consuming. Unless you pay for the pro option, you must schedule each individual tweet one at a time.

·         FaceBook works for me, but not as well as Twitter.

I’ll stick to sharing WIP updates, book info, family stuff and attending release parties on FaceBook. But, advertising there doesn’t make a huge difference for me.

Again this allows me to better manage my time spent on social medias, which frees up more time for family stuff and lets me focus more on my writing.

Remember each social media works different for each person. Keep trying till you find what works best for you and only try a few at a time.

OMG! Best Seller Please?

A few more sales in the USA by the end of this month and it will be a best seller! Anyone know someone looking for a fresh YA/NA Paranormal Romance?

I’m thrilled to even get this close. But, I certainly wouldn’t complain if you all went and pushed me over the mark.  Tomorrow  will be my last shot at pushing for it this month through the writing groups. I’m going to work up a special  promo for it. Anyone want to help by sharing a tweet about it that day? I’d be forever grateful.

Have you ever had a best seller? Ever gotten close? How close?
